What investigators found inside Indiana home where dog killed newborn as Austin Kinsey gets 16 years

An Indiana father was sentenced to 16 years in prison after a dog fatally attacked his 7-day-old newborn son, according to court documents.

Austin Kinsey is the first of six family members sentenced following the 2025 death of the infant, Jason.

The father pleaded guilty in August to multiple charges stemming from the baby’s death, records show.

As part of the plea agreement, a Level 1 felony was dismissed. That left convictions that included neglect of a dependent resulting in serious injury, a Level 3 felony, according to court documents.

A judge ordered Kinsey to serve 16 years in prison. His remaining sentences will run concurrently, meaning they do not add additional time to the term.

The judge cited multiple aggravating factors on the record. Those included Kinsey’s criminal history, previous violations of court orders and the infant’s extremely young age.

Family members told investigators the newborn had been left alone in a living room car seat for less than a minute when the dog attacked him, according to court documents.

Investigators reportedly found broader concerns inside the home, describing unsanitary living conditions with trash and insects.

The family was ordered to leave the residence days after Jason’s death, according to the records.

Five other relatives still face neglect-related charges in connection with the newborn’s death, court documents show.

Those co-defendants include Jason’s mother, uncle, grandfather and grandparents.

They remain accused unless and until their cases result in convictions.

The infant’s mother, 24-year-old Violet Weaver, is scheduled to plead guilty on September 29, court records show.

The remaining defendants have upcoming court proceedings.
