A 43-year-old Tennessee inmate died after deputies found her unresponsive in her jail cell on Saturday afternoon, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
Beverly Turnage, 43, was found unresponsive inside a cell at Jail East in Shelby County, officials said.
The inmate had been jailed since late August on a misdemeanor vandalism charge, court records show. She was not being held on a violent felony or any felony charge at all, according to the records.
Her ex-boyfriend alleged that Turnage broke the glass in his back door after he refused to let her inside his home, court records state.
The ex-boyfriend told investigators she was homeless and living out of a car at the time of the incident, according to court documents.
Turnage reportedly left the scene before police officers arrived, according to the records. She was arrested several days later, court documents show.
The 43-year-old inmate had been scheduled for a court appearance on Friday, court records state.

Her hearing was continued after a public defender was assigned, according to records. By Saturday, she was dead.
Deputies found Turnage unresponsive in her cell shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures on the woman until Memphis Fire Department personnel arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.
Turnage was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to the sheriff’s office.
The inmate was later pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, officials said.
Authorities have not released a cause of death in the case, according to officials. There is currently no indication in the information released that foul play or misconduct caused her death, the sheriff’s office said.
Turnage is reportedly the first inmate to die at Jail East this year.
The investigation into her death remains ongoing, the sheriff’s office said.
