All charges dropped against New Jersey cop Gregory Dietz accused of choking woman unconscious: prosecutors

A New Jersey patrol officer had all charges against him dismissed after being accused of strangling a woman in her apartment, prosecutors said.

Gregory M. Dietz, then 34, is a patrol officer with the Florham Park Police Department, according to court documents.

The officer faced counts of second-degree aggravated assault, fourth-degree stalking, harassment and criminal trespass, according to authorities.

The accusations followed an investigation by police in Roseland, authorities said.

The woman told authorities she first met Dietz in June 2025, according to an arrest affidavit. The two were never in an intimate relationship, she told investigators.

Dietz allegedly began sending the woman multiple inappropriate text messages, according to the affidavit.

The patrolman wanted to be in a relationship with her, investigators said.

In November 2025, Dietz allegedly touched the woman on her buttocks without her consent, according to court documents. He also allegedly made her sit on his lap, the affidavit states.

Dietz continued sending messages and asking the woman to go out with him, investigators said.

On July 5, 2026, the woman told Dietz not to contact her again, according to the affidavit. She then blocked him by phone, Instagram and email, investigators said.

A short time later, Dietz allegedly showed up at her apartment building on Becker Farm Road, investigators said.

The officer did not have an access card to enter the building, according to court documents.

Dietz somehow gained access and knocked on the woman’s door, police said.

The woman allowed him inside because she wanted to completely end their friendship, authorities said.

Once inside, Dietz allegedly attempted to kiss her, according to the affidavit. When she turned her head away, he slapped her across the face, investigators said.

Dietz then allegedly grabbed the woman around the neck with both hands, according to court documents. He applied pressure until she blacked out, police said.

The woman had no further contact with Dietz until July 18, 2026, she told authorities.

Seeing him caused her emotional distress and prompted her to report the earlier incidents, investigators said.

Following the report, Roseland authorities were notified about the alleged assault and stalking, police said.

On July 20, 2026, at 10:16 a.m., Dietz was arrested, police said.

He was taken to the Essex County Jail, where he remained for four days before being released, records show.

The officer denied the allegations, authorities said.

Dietz, who had worked as a Florham Park police officer since February 2019, was suspended without pay following his arrest.

On September 15, 2026, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office dismissed all charges against Dietz, court records show. Prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence to continue the prosecution.

The dismissal does not mean prosecutors determined the woman lied or that the alleged assault did not occur, authorities said. The office concluded there was not sufficient evidence to move forward with the criminal case.

As of September 17, 2026, Dietz remained listed on the police department’s online roster, although his current duty status and whether he will be reinstated have not been publicly clarified.
