Massimo shoved me firmly behind his back, raising the heavy black barrel directly toward the opening door.
The ornate brass doorknob turned all the way, and the heavy mahogany door swung slowly inward.
Adriana stood framed in the dim corridor, her pale gold gown catching the amber glow of the wall sconces.
On her right index finger, the massive Romano family crest gleamed in heavy, polished yellow gold.
"You really shouldn’t leave your private doors unlocked, Massimo," she purred, stepping across the threshold.
"Take one more step and find out what happens," he warned, his voice dropping to a lethal, quiet gravel.
Adriana did not flinch in the slightest at the sight of the loaded firearm aimed directly at her forehead.
Instead, her venomous gaze slipped past his broad shoulder and pinned me against the bedroom wall.
"Did you honestly believe a simple florist was clever enough to navigate up here alone?" she asked coldly.
I stepped out from behind Massimo’s silhouette, refusing to let her look down on me like an insect.
"You orchestrated this entire humiliation downstairs," I said, forcing my voice to remain completely steady.
"You orchestrated your own ruin the second you agreed to take this catering contract," Adriana countered smoothly.
Massimo took a deliberate, threatening step toward her, the tension between them crackling like exposed wire.
"Where did you get that signet ring, Adriana?" he demanded, his eyes darkening with dangerous intent.
Adriana gave a faint, cruel tilt of her painted lips, thoroughly enjoying the chaos she had provoked.
"I certainly didn’t steal it from your personal vault, darling," she said. "Your uncle Roberto gave it to me."
Heavy leather shoes clicked against the marble outside before Roberto Romano stepped into the bedroom doorway.
His formal tuxedo jacket was half-unbuttoned, and his weathered face wore a deeply smug, triumphant expression.
"Lower the weapon before you embarrass our bloodline even further, nephew," Roberto commanded with cold disdain.
Massimo did not lower the barrel by so much as a single millimeter.
"Explain key 317, Roberto," Massimo growled. "Explain why you planted it on an innocent worker tonight."
Roberto looked me up and down with open contempt, taking in my drenched dress and disheveled hair.
"Her name is Sophie Miller," Roberto stated, speaking as though I were completely invisible.
A sharp knot formed in my throat at the sudden, deliberate mention of my family name.
"What does my surname have to do with your twisted games?" I demanded, stepping forward.
"Your late father was the lead structural safety inspector when our west wing burned fifteen years ago," Roberto said.
Massimo’s jaw hardened into rigid stone, a look of profound realization settling into his sharp features.
"David Miller didn’t cause that fire, and you know it," Massimo said. "He discovered that you cut electrical corners."
Roberto’s polished veneer slipped for an instant, replaced by a flash of raw, defensive hatred.
"He was an inconvenient busybody, and his daughter is proving to be just as troublesome," Adriana chimed in.
"The family council would never permit you to break our engagement for a nobody," Adriana added with a sneer.
"Catching you compromising the inspector’s daughter destroys your moral leverage," Roberto explained smugly.
"Isabella will have no choice but to strip your executive authority and hand the chairman seat to me," Roberto added.
The bedroom fell into a suffocating, lethal silence as the scope of their betrayal became undeniable.
"You used a burst pipe and an old key to stage a scandal," Massimo said, his tone chillingly calm.
"It was remarkably easy, given how predictable you are," Roberto laughed softly, checking his gold wristwatch.
A slow, deliberate clapping resonated from the darkened hallway behind Roberto, shattering his smug confidence.
Isabella Romano emerged into the light, dressed in her midnight-blue silk robe and holding her silver cane.
Roberto froze instantly, the color draining from his face as if he had just seen an executioner.
"Mother," Roberto stammered, frantically trying to smooth his disheveled tuxedo collar.
"You always were remarkably arrogant, Roberto, but I never believed you were truly this stupid," Isabella spoke.
The matriarch held up a glowing silver tablet displaying active audio and visual feeds from the master suite.
"Every camera and listening device on this floor has been streaming to my private screen," Isabella announced.
Adriana gasped, instinctively taking a step backward toward the corridor wall in sheer panic.
Massimo lowered his weapon, his expression transforming into the merciless look of a man who had won completely.
"Marco, take them," Massimo commanded, his voice cutting through the bedroom like a blade.
Five burly security operatives stepped swiftly out from the shadows, instantly surrounding Roberto and Adriana.
"Remove Roberto from this property and revoke every corporate credential he holds," Massimo instructed firmly.
"You cannot touch me, I am a Romano!" Roberto bellowed as two guards pinned his arms behind his back.
"Give me the signet ring, Roberto," Isabella commanded, extending her weathered hand with chilling authority.
Roberto’s hands shook violently as he slipped the heavy gold band off and slapped it into his mother’s palm.
"And tell your father our merger is officially terminated," Massimo added coldly, staring down a weeping Adriana.
The guards dragged both of them down the grand hallway until their frantic shouts vanished into the night.
Isabella turned toward me, her piercing dark gaze softening with an unexpected warmth and sorrow.
"Your father was a man of absolute integrity, Sophie," she said gently. "We owe your family a tremendous debt."
Isabella offered a brief, knowing nod to Massimo before pulling the heavy double doors firmly closed.
The sudden quiet rushed back into the room, and all the adrenaline drained out of my exhausted limbs.
My knees buckled beneath me, but Massimo caught me before I could fall, his strong hands steady around my waist.
"You are entirely safe now, Sophie," he whispered, gazing down at me with uncharacteristic tenderness.
"Does your family still think I am your secret lover?" I murmured, looking up into his dark eyes.
A rare, breathtaking smile softened his sharp features as he held me securely against his chest.
"Only if you want that to be true," Massimo answered, his thumb gently brushing a stray wet curl from my cheek.
