The most dangerous man in Chicago knew Emma Bennett’s name long before she had ever spoken a single word to him.

The heavy card pressed into Emma’s trembling palm, its sharp gilded corners biting into her skin like a brand.

"Run, Emma," Nathaniel murmured, his dark eyes never leaving the crowded hall behind her.

He released her fingers with deliberate reluctance, severing the unexpected warmth that had anchored her amidst the chaos.

Emma gathered the flowing silk hem of her borrowed champagne gown and cut swiftly through the sea of guests.

Whispers rippled across the ballroom as high-society patrons turned to watch her sudden, unceremonious retreat.

Near the towering ice sculpture beside the south bar, she finally spotted Liv chatting with an investment manager.

Emma grabbed her best friend’s bare arm with enough force to spill vintage champagne over the crystal rim.

"We are leaving right this second," Emma breathed, her voice tight with undeniable panic.

Liv took one look at Emma’s bloodless complexion and immediately abandoned her drink on a passing tray.

The biting November chill struck them instantly as they burst through the hotel’s revolving glass doors.

Emma hailed the first yellow cab idling beneath the glowing streetlamps, practically pushing Liv inside.

"Lincoln Park, hurry," Emma ordered the driver, sliding across the cracked vinyl seat and slamming the door.

She turned in her seat and pressed her forehead against the fogged glass of the rear window.

A sleek black sedan pulled smoothly away from the hotel curb, gliding into traffic three car lengths behind them.

They were being relentlessly hunted through the rain-slicked heart of Chicago.

The cab screeched to a halt in front of their brownstone, and Emma tossed forty dollars over the divider.

They scrambled out into the freezing mist and bolted up the stone staircase beneath the flickering porch lantern.

Emma reached for her apartment keys, only to find the heavy wooden front door already standing ajar.

The heavy deadbolt was splintered, with fresh brass shavings scattered across the faded welcome mat.

"Stay behind me," Emma whispered, pushing the damaged door open with trembling fingers.

A whimpering figure sat slumped against their living room radiator, clutching a broken nose in agony.

It was Jason, curled like a wounded animal on the worn rug.

His designer jacket was shredded, and dark purple bruises bloomed across his swollen, dirt-streaked jaw.

"Emma, thank God you’re home," Jason sobbed, crawling toward her across the scratched floorboards.

"What did you do, Jason?" Emma asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy hush.

"They found me, Em," he stammered, tears tracking through dried blood. "They said they’d gut me alive."

"So you traded my name to save your own skin," she said, disbelief hardening into white-hot fury.

"I had to give them something real!" Jason wailed. "You always wanted that damn restaurant anyway!"

Heavy footsteps ascended the wooden stairwell outside with brutal, unhurried cadence.

The middle-aged stranger in the tailored gray suit stepped into the doorway, holding a silenced revolver at his side.

"Touching domestic reunion," the enforcer sneered, his cold gray eyes sweeping over the room.

Emma stepped boldly in front of Liv, shielding her terrified friend with her own trembling body.

"You owe the Moretti family sixty thousand dollars, Miss Bennett," the gunman said with a cruel grin.

"She doesn’t owe you a single cent," a lethal voice echoed from the hallway shadows.

Before the gunman could turn, Nathaniel stepped across the threshold and seized the man’s weapon hand.

A sickening snap echoed through the room as Nathaniel twisted the enforcer’s wrist with calculated precision.

The revolver clattered harmlessly across the wooden floorboards, skittering out of reach into the shadows.

Nathaniel slammed the man face-first into the plaster wall with terrifying, effortless force.

Two imposing guards in dark overcoats appeared instantly, pinning the thrashing enforcer against the frame.

"I warned your bosses never to operate north of Roosevelt Road," Nathaniel whispered icily.

The enforcer gasped for air, his face completely draining of color as he recognized his captor.

"Russo," the gunman choked out. "We didn’t know she belonged to you."

"She belongs to no one," Nathaniel replied evenly. "Remove him."

The guards dragged the enforcer down the stairs, leaving behind a suffocating, ringing silence in the apartment.

Nathaniel slowly turned his predatory gaze toward Jason, who was cowering behind the frayed couch.

"Did you ever lay a hand on her?" Nathaniel asked, step by calculated step closing the distance.

"No, please, Mr. Russo, don’t touch me!" Jason cried out, curling into a pathetic ball on the floor.

Emma stepped directly into Nathaniel’s path, placing her open palm flat against his chest.

"Don’t," Emma whispered, meeting his dark eyes. "He isn’t worth the blood on your hands."

Nathaniel stared down at her fingers resting over his steady heartbeat, and the tension in his jaw relaxed.

"Leave this city tonight, Jason," Nathaniel commanded quietly. "If you are in Illinois by sunrise, you will disappear."

Jason scrambled to his feet without looking back, bolting through the doorway and out into the night.

Liv quietly slipped into the kitchen, shutting the door behind her to give them much-needed privacy.

Emma exhaled a trembling breath she felt like she had been holding for the last six agonizing months.

Nathaniel reached into his tailored tuxedo jacket and pulled out a thick manila folder.

"What is this?" Emma asked, her voice barely rising above a broken whisper.

"The forged loan has been incinerated," Nathaniel said, gently placing the documents into her hands.

"And the commercial deed for 4th and Elm is fully registered under your name," he added.

Tears pricked Emma’s eyes as she opened the folder and saw the approved architectural plans for June.

"You gave me back my future," she whispered, looking up into the unreadable eyes of Chicago’s most dangerous man.
