The little girl looked completely out of place beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers.

The fragile slip of paper trembled visibly between Adrian’s rigid fingers.

Around them, the soft murmur of the grand ballroom faded into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Vanessa stepped closer, her expensive diamond earrings catching the glare of the chandeliers.

“Adrian, what on earth is that?” she demanded, glaring at the scrap with open disgust.

He did not answer her, his entire body frozen in absolute shock.

Slowly, his gaze lowered from the handwritten ink back down to the little girl standing before him.

Under the bright lights, the child’s features struck him with the force of a physical blow.

She possessed Claire’s distinct emerald-green eyes and the exact same stubborn curve of her jaw.

“Where did you get this, Lily?” Adrian asked, his voice shaking with a ragged breath.

“Mommy wrote it before she couldn’t get out of bed anymore,” Lily replied in a tiny whisper.

“She stayed at the Fourth Street shelter because her chest hurt too bad to walk.”

Adrian felt as though the polished marble beneath his leather shoes was suddenly crumbling into nothingness.

For seven agonizing years, he had harbored bitter hatred, believing Claire had stolen his family fortune and fled.

“This is ridiculous theater,” Vanessa scoffed, turning sharply toward the private security guards posted by the double doors.

“She’s running an obvious con, Adrian, just like that wretched woman did back then.”

Two burly guards in dark tailored suits immediately moved forward across the polished floor.

“Take one more step toward this child, and you will never work in this city again,” Adrian snarled.

The guards instantly froze in their tracks, exchanging uncertain, alarmed glances.

Vanessa’s pale face flushed with deep crimson under the judgmental stares of three hundred guests.

“Have you lost your mind? You are humiliating both of us in front of everyone!”

“I do not give a damn about anyone in this room,” Adrian replied, his voice dropping to a lethal quiet.

Lily reached deep into the ragged inner pocket of her coat once more.

“Mommy told me to give you this too, if you looked angry,” the child said quietly.

She held out her tiny palm, revealing an antique silver signet ring hanging from a worn leather cord.

Adrian felt the air leave his lungs in an agonizing rush.

It was his family’s crested heirloom ring, the very heirloom Vanessa had sworn Claire stole from his bedroom safe.

Tucked beneath the coiled leather cord was a second, yellowed slip of official paper.

Adrian took the paper, his hands trembling so violently he could barely unfold the creased edges.

It was a certified birth certificate stamped seven years ago by a charity clinic across town.

Adrian Vale was written in clear, indelible black ink as the biological father.

A stunned, breathless hush fell across the surrounding circle of wealthy patrons and socialites.

Vanessa took an involuntary step backward, the color draining completely from her powdered cheeks.

“That proves nothing,” Vanessa stammered, her voice pitching upward in mounting panic. “She faked it!”

Adrian slowly rose to his full height, his broad frame casting a long shadow over her.

“You told me she stole this ring out of my private safe the night she disappeared,” he said.

“Adrian, please, you know how manipulative Claire was—”

“No one possessed the combination to that vault except for me and you,” Adrian interrupted, his voice frigid.

“You took the ring, framed the woman I loved, and ran her out into the cold.”

Vanessa opened her trembling mouth, but no sound came out past her painted lips.

Her terrified silence was a louder confession than any spoken excuse could have ever been.

“Take off my grandmother’s engagement ring,” Adrian commanded, his eyes completely devoid of warmth.

“You cannot do this to me in public!” she hissed, tears of bitter mortification welling in her eyes.

“Take it off, or I will have security throw you onto the pavement this very second.”

Shaking with rage and shame, Vanessa yanked the five-carat diamond from her finger and hurled it at the banquet table.

She turned and fled through the whispering crowd, leaving a path of murmuring socialites behind her.

Adrian did not watch her leave, turning his back entirely on the scandalized ballroom.

He sank to both knees on the cold marble floor directly in front of the little girl.

“Lily,” he said, his deep voice cracking with an unbearable grief he had carried for years.

The girl looked at him with wide, hopeful eyes. “Are you really my daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart,” Adrian whispered, warm tears spilling down his face. “I am your daddy.”

“Mommy told me you would come save us if you knew where we were,” she murmured softly.

Adrian reached into his breast pocket and dialed his head physician on absolute speaker.

“Marcus, dispatch the emergency trauma team and our mobile ICU to the Fourth Street shelter immediately,” he ordered.

“Alert the top pulmonary department at St. Jude’s; Claire is fighting for her life.”

Without waiting for a response, he slid his strong arms under Lily and lifted her gently against his chest.

The little girl buried her face into the curve of his neck, clinging to his tuxedo jacket with all her strength.

Adrian swept his heavy cashmere overcoat around her shivering shoulders, sheltering her from the bitter draft.

He strode toward the grand exit without a single backward glance at the wealth and prestige he was leaving behind.

For the first time in seven years, Adrian had something real to fight for, and he would not stop until Claire was safe.
