THE HOUSE WENT DARK BEFORE HIS DEAD WIFE’S VOICE FILLED THE ROOM

The sudden darkness inside Blackwood House felt suffocating, broken only by the low hiss of dead static. The air tasted faintly of copper and burning dust.

Ethan froze in the center of the foyer, his heart hammering furiously against his ribs. Every muscle in his body locked tight.

Directly behind him, floorboards creaked beneath a slow, shifting weight. A faint draft brushed the back of his exposed neck.

"Did you hear that, Adrian?" Ethan asked into the void, not daring to turn his head.

The pitch-black room offered no spoken answer. Instead, a rhythmic, shallow breathing sounded only inches away.

On the cold parquet floor before him, his daughter Maya let out a weak, shuddering groan. Her small fingers clawed faintly at the wood.

Ethan dropped to one knee, keeping one defensive arm raised behind his back. He shielded her body with his own trembling frame.

His fingers reached forward and brushed Maya’s trembling shoulder. He flinched at the unexpected sensation beneath his palm.

Her skin felt unnaturally frigid, like polished marble dredged from winter ice. There was no sweat, no pulse, only synthetic stillness.

"Dad…" Maya whimpered, her voice sounding oddly flat and metallic in the dark.

Ethan strained his eyes to penetrate the gloom, searching for any recognizable outline. Shadows seemed to twist along the oak-paneled walls.

His dead wife’s voice continued to reverberate through the ceiling vents like an icy ghost. The audio loop crackled with digitized grief.

Do not trust the person standing behind you. The spectral warning echoed directly inside Ethan’s pounding temples.

A sharp mechanical click echoed through the walls as amber emergency strips flickered along the baseboards. The dim glow cast long, monstrous shadows across the foyer.

Ethan blinked against the sudden amber light and felt his stomach drop into a pit of dread. The room was not configured as he remembered.

Adrian was not standing behind him at all.

Adrian stood ten paces away against the limestone hearth, completely motionless. His shattered wine glass lay pooled around his polished shoes.

His hands were raised high in surrender, his knuckles bleached white from terror.

"Ethan, please don’t move an inch," Adrian pleaded in a ragged whisper.

Ethan slowly turned his head to look over his left shoulder. A chill cascaded down his spine.

The girl who looked like Maya was no longer lying helpless on the floorboards. She had risen silently onto her knees right behind him.

Her wide, glassy eyes were locked onto Ethan’s face, completely unblinking. Her pupils were dilated into twin black voids that caught no light.

In her small right hand gleamed a heavy, pneumatic surgical injector. A pale chemical luminescence pulsed within its glass chamber.

"Maya, what are you doing?" Ethan breathed, cold sweat beading across his forehead.

"She isn’t your daughter, Ethan," Adrian said, taking a cautious step forward.

"Stay back, Adrian!" Ethan barked, his mind reeling between protective instinct and sheer disbelief.

"You built this house to hide your forbidden cybernetic research," Adrian said, pointing down at the floor.

"When Sarah discovered the truth, you wiped your own memories because you couldn’t bear the guilt," Adrian continued.

Ethan pressed his palms to his temples as fractured images of surgical suites flashed behind his eyes. The migraine was blinding.

The girl tilted her head at an unnatural, precise angle. Her porcelain face remained entirely vacant of human emotion.

"The command was authorized twelve years ago," the girl spoke, her voice modulating into Sarah’s dead cadence.

A heavy grinding tremor shook the foundation as magnetic floor bolts disengaged beneath the carpet. Hydraulic pistons hissed under the floorboards.

The central floorplate slid back with a metallic groan, revealing an iron staircase plunging into darkness. A cold draft smelling of ozone wafted upward.

From the subterranean depths below, a fragile, trembling voice drifted into the foyer.

"Dad? Is that you up there?" the distant voice cried softly.

Ethan’s heart seized as the horrifying reality locked into place. That was Maya’s genuine voice, muffled behind heavy glass.

The duplicate lunged forward with explosive speed, driving the steel injector straight toward Ethan’s carotid artery.

Ethan twisted sideways, catching her cold wrist with both hands just inches from his throat.

Her arm possessed terrifying, motorized strength that forced him down onto his back. She did not grunt or breathe as she exerted pressure.

Adrian sprinted across the foyer, tackling the duplicate across the open threshold. Both of them crashed violently onto the grating.

The pneumatic injector slipped from her grasp, clattering down the dark stairwell. It shattered on the lower steps with a sharp hiss.

"Run down there now, Ethan!" Adrian roared, pinning the thrashing girl. "The security purge will initiate in two minutes!"

"What did I create?" Ethan yelled, his voice cracking as he scrambled toward the staircase.

"Sarah hid your real daughter below to protect her from you!" Adrian yelled back, his grip slipping on the synthetic skin.

The duplicate opened its jaw abnormally wide, emitting an ear-splitting acoustic shriek that shattered the glass cabinets.

Ethan turned and plunged down the narrow iron stairs into the freezing sub-basement. He did not look back.

Ethan reached the damp concrete floor beneath a canopy of pulsing blue stasis conduits. The air was thick with mist and cold preservation gas.

In the center of the vault stood an oval containment pod of reinforced glass. Soft bio-monitors flickered gently across its steel base.

Inside the pod sat a terrified little girl with bruised knees and tear-stained cheeks. She pressed both small hands against the cold barrier.

Ethan hurled himself at the control pedestal, slamming his palm onto the manual emergency release. The pneumatic locks hissed loudly.

The glass enclosure slid smoothly upward, allowing the child to tumble outward into his arms.

"I’m here, Maya, I’ve got you," Ethan choked out, wrapping his coat around her shuddering shoulders.

"I knew you’d find me, Dad," she sobbed, burying her tearful face against his chest. Her skin was warm, pulsing with fragile life.

Above them, the massive floorplate slammed shut with a deafening thud. The duplicate’s shrieking was cut instantly dead.

A flood of restored memories rushed into Ethan’s mind, burning away the artificial amnesia. He remembered his wife’s final words of forgiveness.

He remembered Sarah sacrificing herself to lock this sanctuary, keeping Maya safe until Ethan could awaken to the truth.

Ethan kicked open the rusted storm drainage hatch hidden behind the backup generators. A blast of cool night air and rain rushed inside.

Carrying his true daughter out into the stormy night, Ethan left Blackwood House behind, sealing its dark legacy in the earth forever.
