The first time my fiancée called me useless, the whole room laughed.

Daniel froze, his cocktail glass trembling between white-knuckled fingers.

"I don’t know what you’re talking about, Julian," Vanessa stammered, taking an involuntary half-step backward.

The arrogant smirk that had defined her face for months was completely gone.

"Don’t you?" I asked, keeping my voice dangerously calm.

Daniel cleared his throat and stepped into the open space between us.

"Julian, you’re exhausted," Daniel said, attempting a patronizing smile. "The trauma from the wreck is making you paranoid."

"Is it, Daniel?" I asked, tilting my head.

Clara remained on her knees beside my wheelchair, her small fingers still clutching the wool fabric.

"Tell him, Clara," I murmured gently. "Tell everyone what you heard outside my study two nights ago."

Vanessa’s mother gasped, clutching her pearls near the marble fireplace.

"Don’t listen to a maid!" Vanessa snapped, her voice pitching an octave higher. "She’s an opportunist!"

Uncle Martin stepped forward, raising his hands in a practiced gesture of peacemaking.

"Let us not create an undignified scene in front of our distinguished guests," Martin pleaded, his eyes darting toward the exits.

"No, Uncle," I said. "Let us finish this in front of everyone who came to watch me fall."

Clara raised her chin and looked straight at the glittering crowd.

"Miss Vanessa told Mr. Daniel that the brake lines had worked exactly as planned," Clara said, her voice ringing clearly.

A collective shudder ripped through the ballroom.

"She promised him thirty percent of the board voting shares once Julian was declared incapacitated," Clara continued without wavering.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Daniel shouted, his face draining of all color.

He pointed an accusatory finger directly at Clara.

"She’s trying to extort us! You’re taking the word of a cleaning girl over your fiancé and best friend?"

Vanessa turned on Daniel with sudden, venomous fury.

"Shut up, Daniel!" she hissed. "You swore the library was completely empty when we met!"

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Vanessa had just confirmed the meeting herself.

She slapped a manicured hand over her open mouth, realizing the fatal slip too late.

"You clumsy idiot," Daniel muttered bitterly, stepping away from her as if she were contagious.

"You convinced me to do this!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging at him with clawed hands. "You said he wouldn’t survive the crash!"

Uncle Martin turned pale and began edging toward the grand double doors.

My security chief, Marcus, stepped directly into Martin’s path with his arms folded across his chest.

"Nobody leaves," Marcus announced coldly. "The state police are already waiting in the foyer."

Whispers exploded across the room like wildfire, every investor and socialite recoiling from the pair.

I placed both hands firmly on the armrests of the wheelchair.

Clara stepped back carefully, giving me room, a knowing gleam in her dark eyes.

Slowly, deliberately, I pushed the gray blanket off my lap and let it fall to the polished floor.

Then, I stood up.

Vanessa stumbled backward, her heels catching on the carpet.

A chorus of gasps echoed off the high vaulted ceiling.

Daniel dropped his drink, the crystal shattering into dozens of glittering shards at his feet.

I stood at my full height, towering over both of them without a trace of pain or weakness.

"You thought you broke me," I said, my voice echoing through the vast hall.

Vanessa stared at my legs, her chest heaving as if she couldn’t pull air into her lungs.

"You… you were paralyzed," she whispered, shaking her head in sheer denial. "The doctors said—"

"The doctors work for me, Vanessa," I replied smoothly. "Not for you."

I took three steady, measured steps toward her, closing the distance between us.

"I needed to see who loved me, and who was merely waiting to feast on my corpse."

Vanessa collapsed onto an antique settee, completely destroyed.

I reached down and took her trembling left hand in mine.

Without a word, I slid the eight-carat diamond ring off her finger.

"Our engagement is terminated," I said, dropping the ring into my jacket pocket.

Uniformed officers entered through the tall mahogany doors, their heavy boots clicking on the marble.

Daniel didn’t even fight as the handcuffs snapped around his wrists.

Uncle Martin was led away next, his head bowed in absolute disgrace.

As two officers escorted Vanessa out in tears, the ballroom remained frozen in stunned awe.

I turned my back on the gossips, the fake friends, and the cowards who had laughed at me minutes before.

I walked over to Clara, who was quietly watching from the edge of the dais.

"You risked everything to stand by me," I told her, offering her my hand.

"You treated me like a human being when everyone else treated me like furniture," she replied softly.

I smiled, feeling the true weight of my family’s legacy settle onto my shoulders for the first time.

"Starting tomorrow, Clara, you run the household estate—and by next month, you sit on my foundation’s board."
