On Sunday, August 31, an ordinary weekend grocery trip turned into a violent encounter for a family in Mocksville, North Carolina.

The incident unfolded outside a local Food Lion supermarket during the evening hours.

A husband, whose name has not been made public by authorities, drove to the grocery store with his wife and their children.

He pulled the family’s vehicle up near the store’s entrance doors.

His wife got out of the car and headed inside the supermarket to complete her shopping.

The husband then drove into the parking lot to find a space.

He parked the car.

He remained inside the vehicle with the couple’s children while waiting for his wife to return.

At approximately 8:30 p.m., a man identified by authorities as 36-year-old Eric Burgess approached the parked vehicle.

According to the account provided, there had been no argument between the two men prior to the approach.

There had been no verbal dispute or physical confrontation of any kind.

Authorities have noted that no prior relationship existed between Burgess and the family that would explain what was about to happen.

Then Burgess allegedly reached directly through the vehicle’s window.

He allegedly stabbed the husband in the neck.

He also allegedly stabbed the father in the lower portion of his face.

The man’s children were inside the vehicle when their father was attacked.

The father began bleeding from the knife wounds to his neck and face.

Despite the blood and the sudden violence, the husband reportedly stayed composed for the sake of his children.

He reached for his phone.

He placed a call to his wife, who was still shopping inside the Food Lion.

He spoke to her from the car to tell her what had just happened in the parking lot.

The injured father then began to slowly drive his vehicle toward the front entrance of the grocery store.

His goal was to pick up his wife.

He wanted to collect her safely before seeking medical attention for his wounds and reporting the assault to authorities.

But as his wife walked out of the Food Lion, the situation took another dangerous turn.

The wounded husband allegedly saw Burgess running directly toward his unsuspecting wife.

Burgess was allegedly carrying the blade as he sprinted across the parking lot toward her.

The husband reacted immediately.

He hit the accelerator.

According to the account, the husband accelerated his vehicle toward Burgess.

He steered the car to intercept the armed suspect before he could reach his wife.

The vehicle struck Burgess.

The impact knocked Burgess to the ground.

But Burgess reportedly got back onto his feet.

Instead of fleeing the area, he ran inside the Food Lion.

Deputies with the Davie County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the supermarket.

Upon arriving at the Food Lion, deputies entered the building and began searching the business.

Authorities reportedly found Burgess inside the grocery store.

He was located hiding behind the store’s deli counter.

Deputies took Burgess into custody on the scene.

Following his arrest, Burgess was transported to a local detention facility.

He was booked into the Davie County Detention Center.

Authorities booked him on a formal charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Medical personnel provided emergency treatment to the husband for the stab wounds to his neck and face.

Fortunately, his injuries were evaluated and determined to be non-life-threatening.

Authorities stated that no prior dispute or background relationship has been identified to explain why the family was targeted.

Burgess faces serious allegations.

He has been charged.

He has not been convicted.

Under the justice system, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
