Massachusetts Man Sentenced to Prison in Multi-County Michigan Senior Fraud Scheme

In October 2025, authorities in Portage, Michigan, were notified about a nationwide organized crime ring.

The network was allegedly targeting senior citizens and defrauding them of large amounts of money.

Investigators identified an elderly Portage resident who had been targeted by the ring.

That victim had already lost more than $600,000 over several months.

Authorities said the victim had been persuaded to withdraw large amounts of cash.

The resident was told to hand the money directly to a courier.

Those cash handoffs occurred either at the victim’s home or in public locations.

Then detectives communicated directly with the suspects.

Investigators arranged another cash exchange.

On November 14, 2025, an undercover operation was carried out.

The operation led to the arrest of 38-year-old Xiao Yu Wang of Massachusetts.

Investigators then identified a second elderly Portage victim.

Wang had allegedly defrauded that second victim of $30,000 two days earlier.

But the cases reached beyond Portage.

Authorities later linked Wang to additional victims in West Branch, Michigan.

Authorities also linked him to victims in Warren, Michigan.

In Iosco County, Wang was charged in connection with a similar offense.

He was convicted on that Iosco County charge.

And an accomplice was convicted in Macomb County for related criminal activity.

On August 17, 2026, Wang was sentenced to three to 20 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections.

He was also ordered to pay $447,000 in restitution.

One victim lost more than $600,000.

Multiple Michigan jurisdictions were involved.

Wang is now sentenced to state prison.
