Luigi Mangione's lawyer considered family attending his guilty plea: 'If they do, there would only be two people'

Luigi Mangione’s prominent family was in talks to attend the court hearing in which he pleaded guilty to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

A transcript from a closed-door proceeding in Mangione’s federal case was recently unsealed.

On August 6, the federal court held that conference behind closed doors.

The unsealed transcript reveals that the 28-year-old defendant’s legal team had been preparing for the possibility of his family attending.

Their appearance would have marked their first time in court since his arrest.

In December 2024, authorities arrested Mangione in Pennsylvania following a five-day manhunt.

The closed-door conference was presided over by U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett.

Judge Garnett questioned Mangione’s defense attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, according to court documents exclusively obtained by Us.

“Are you expecting any of Mr. Mangione’s family to attend the plea?” Judge Garnett asked.

“I’m in discussions with them about that,” Friedman Agnifilo responded at the time.

“If they do, there would only be two people,” the defense attorney added.

Friedman Agnifilo did not name either of the two relatives who had considered attending.

On August 14, the court convened for the plea hearing.

But they ultimately chose to remain out of the spotlight.

Several members of Thompson’s family, however, did appear in court.

They were present when Mangione confessed to stalking the 50-year-old executive.

They watched as he confessed to fatally shooting him outside of a New York City hotel.

Mangione admitted to carrying out the fatal shooting over his grievances with the U.S. health insurance industry.

Us reached out to Mangione’s lawyers for comment on why his family opted not to attend his plea hearing.

Mangione belongs to an affluent Maryland family.

His family has been involved in local business in his home state for decades.

The family has also participated in Maryland philanthropy for decades.

In addition, they have been involved in Maryland politics for decades.

Mangione is an Ivy League graduate.

Following his arrest in Pennsylvania, his family spoke out publicly only once.

Their joint statement was shared via Facebook by his cousin, Baltimore City Council member Nino Mangione.

“Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mangione. We only know what we have read in the media,” they said in the joint statement.

“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news.”

Months before the shooting, Luigi completed a solo backpacking trip across Asia.

In June 2024, Luigi went off the grid.

That disappearance occurred six months before he murdered Thompson.

He stopped posting on social media accounts.

He ceased communication with his friends.

He also ceased communication with his family.

Those family members included his parents, Louis and Kathleen Mangione.

They also included his sisters, MariaSanta and Luciana.

In November 2024, his mother reported him missing.

She told police that she had not heard from him since July.

Two weeks later, Luigi shot Thompson using a 3D-printed handgun.

Thompson was walking toward a hotel in Midtown Manhattan when the shooting occurred.

The executive was walking to UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference.

On August 14, Luigi admitted his advance planning in federal court.

He admitted that prior to the incident, he had emailed the multibillion-dollar company.

He posed as an investor in the email so that he could get information about the conference.

Luigi also addressed his physical health during the courtroom proceeding.

He stated that he had experienced years of “severe pain.”

He told the court that the pain was “from a broken back.”

Then he traveled to New York.

He admitted that he traveled “with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson.”

Luigi had initially maintained his innocence.

But he pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges.

He faces a maximum of life in prison on those federal charges.

Luigi was also hit with several state charges.

Yet his state trial has been postponed indefinitely.

His lawyers argued that double jeopardy laws should bar him from being tried twice for the same offense.

The state proceedings remain on hold.

The federal guilty plea stands.

On December 18, he is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court.
