A Louisiana middle school teacher was arrested for his alleged role in an afternoon double shooting, authorities said.
Kyle Delaney, 25, previously worked as a teacher at Gonzales Middle School.
The district’s website states that Delaney was named New Teacher of the Year for the 2024-2025 school year.
On Tuesday, September 15, gunfire broke out around 5:30 p.m. on St. Vincent Street, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies called to the scene discovered two injured men. Both victims were transported to an area hospital, where they were listed in stable condition, police said.
One victim reportedly sustained a single gunshot wound, while the other was shot multiple times, authorities said.
The ages of the two wounded men have not been publicly revealed by investigators.
Detectives launched an investigation into the gunfire and identified Delaney as a suspect, authorities said.
The former teacher allegedly arrived at the scene, stepped out of his vehicle, and fired multiple shots toward the victims before driving away, detectives said.
Police have not revealed whether Delaney knew the victims prior to the incident. Investigators have also not disclosed a suspected motive in the shooting.

Hours after the incident, authorities located Delaney at a home in Gonzales and placed him under arrest.
Delaney was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail, according to officials.
Authorities charged Delaney with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, according to records.
The former educator was additionally charged with illegal use of weapons and criminal damage to property, police said.
Ascension Public Schools confirmed following the arrest that Delaney is no longer employed by the district. School officials stated that September 15 was his final day of employment.
The district also issued a formal statement regarding the incident, according to WAFB.
“As this is an active law enforcement matter, questions regarding the incident, arrest, or criminal charges should be directed to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, and we are unable to comment further on personnel matters,” the statement read.
It was not immediately clear if Delaney has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following his arrest.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding updates in the case.
Delaney remains behind bars at the Ascension Parish Jail awaiting bond, authorities said.
