“Let go of him!”

Leah stepped toward Mara, her eyes wide with sudden, sickening comprehension.

“January fourteenth,” Leah whispered, looking down at the cowering animal. “That was the night of the sub-zero blizzard.”

The video started playing, the sharp sound of howling winter wind cutting through the silent cathedral ballroom.

On the screen, a woman in an expensive white cashmere coat dragged a metal crate across the icy concrete toward the shelter dock.

Vanessa lunged forward, her heavy silk train whipping violently against the wooden pews.

“Turn that off right now, Mara!” she shrieked, her voice cracking with fury.

Evan moved faster, stepping directly into Vanessa’s path and blocking her reach.

“Don’t you dare touch her,” Evan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet and steady.

Charles Whitmore rushed into the center aisle, his face mottled red with fury.

“Evan, this is completely out of line!” Charles barked, waving his hands.

“Control this situation before you embarrass both of our families in front of everyone!” Charles added.

“I am controlling it,” Evan replied, not taking his eyes off the illuminated phone screen.

The security footage continued playing, crisp and undeniable beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers.

On the screen, the woman shoved the crate into a freezing snowdrift and kicked the door shut.

Then she pulled down her fur-lined hood, revealing Vanessa’s unmistakably sharp profile in the floodlights.

A collective gasp rippled through the two hundred seated wedding guests.

“You left a four-week-old puppy out in twenty-degree weather,” Leah said, her voice shaking with rage.

“He was nearly frozen to death when my morning tech found him,” Leah added, pulling Milo tighter.

Vanessa backed away from Evan, her manicured hands smoothing down her crumpled designer gown.

“It wasn’t like that!” Vanessa pleaded, looking desperately around the silent, staring room.

“Then explain it to all of us,” Evan said, his tone razor sharp.

“He ruined my vintage Chanel boots!” Vanessa shrieked without thinking.

The entire sanctuary fell into an appalled, suffocating silence.

Vanessa instantly clamped a hand over her mouth, realizing the horrifying confession she had just made.

“You bought him from an unlicensed puppy mill, didn’t you?” Mara asked, stepping forward with her chin high.

“Shut your mouth, Mara!” Charles bellowed, taking an aggressive step toward the assistant.

“She forced me to drive the car that night,” Mara told the groom’s horrified parents.

“I recorded that video because I knew she would try to rewrite history someday,” Mara said.

Leah looked down at the trembling animal in her arms, tears stinging her eyes.

“And then you requested him specifically for the wedding publicity,” Leah said with deep disgust.

“You saw his viral recovery story and planned this entire stunt to look like a saint,” Leah added.

Vanessa glared at the shelter director, all traces of bridal elegance vanishing from her face.

“It was great publicity for your pathetic little shelter!” Vanessa snarled, dropping all pretense.

“Nobody would even care about that worthless mongrel without my name attached to him!” she screamed.

Milo whimpered softly, burying his dark muzzle deeper into Leah’s blazer.

Evan reached up to his tuxedo lapel with steady, deliberate fingers.

He unpinned the white rose boutonnière and let it drop onto the stone floor.

“Evan, please!” Vanessa gasped, lunging toward him. “Think about our families and the merger!”

“Do not touch me,” Evan said, pulling away with unmistakable revulsion.

Charles stepped between them, his voice dropping into a harsh, venomous threat.

“If you walk away today, Cole, your firm will lose every single contract with my partners.”

Evan did not hesitate for even a fraction of a second.

“Cancel them all,” Evan replied quietly.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the heavy platinum wedding band.

Evan dropped the ring onto the white silk aisle runner, watching it roll to a stop.

“There is no wedding,” Evan announced clearly to the stunned congregation.

Evan turned his back on the altar and walked straight down the aisle toward Leah.

He knelt gently onto the polished stone floor, lowering himself down to Milo’s level.

“Hey there, buddy,” Evan whispered, his voice softening completely.

Milo lifted his head from Leah’s shoulder, watching Evan with wide, cautious brown eyes.

Evan extended one open hand, keeping his palm low and perfectly still.

Milo hesitated, took a gentle sniff of the air, and slowly crept out from behind Leah.

The little puppy pressed his cold nose against Evan’s warm fingers.

A tiny, tentative tail wag thumped softly against the stone floor.

Behind them, Vanessa collapsed to her knees, wailing loudly as her mother tried to shield her.

Guests began standing up in silence, murmuring in disgust as they filed toward the exit doors.

Evan looked up at Leah, a faint, relieved smile touching his face.

“Can we go straight to the shelter to finalize his real adoption papers?” Evan asked.

Leah wiped away a tear and nodded with a warm smile.

“He’s already yours, Evan,” Leah answered softly.

Evan lifted Milo gently into his arms, carefully untying the ridiculous silk ring pouch.

He tossed the blue ribbon aside and held the puppy securely against his chest.

Together with Leah and Mara, Evan walked out into the warm afternoon sun, leaving the ruined ceremony far behind.
