A Leeds man was sentenced to 25 years after stabbing a woman up to 30 times with a broken bottle, according to court documents.

Ibrahim Albashir, 34, lives in Leeds, England.
Two days before the attack, Albashir was stopped by police in the Headingley area of Leeds, court documents state.
Officers found the 34-year-old with his trousers around his ankles, according to court proceedings.
Albashir was observed in what was later described in court as a “trance-like state,” according to testimony.
Officers released the suspect without filing charges. No action was taken during the Headingley stop, according to court records.
Albashir was later found to have catatonic schizophrenia, according to court documents.
Nobody has said publicly whether that earlier stop in the city was ever reviewed against what happened next, records show.
On the night of March 17, 2024, a woman was walking home from a meal out, according to police.
The encounter took place opposite the Original Oak pub on Otley Road, police said.
Albashir grabbed the woman from behind along the roadway, according to court documents.
Witnesses called the incident a “frenzied” attack, according to court proceedings.
The defendant held the woman from behind with one arm, court records show. Albashir went at her with a broken bottle in the other hand, according to court documents.
Albashir hit the victim as many as 30 times with the weapon, according to court proceedings.
Security staff from the Original Oak heard the woman’s screams, according to police.
The doormen ran out from the pub to stop him, police said.
Det Insp Richard James of West Yorkshire Police later addressed the doormen’s response, stating, “Without their actions, this could very easily have been a m*rder investigation.”
Albashir pleaded guilty to attempted murder, according to court records.
The defendant was sentenced to 25 years in prison alongside an indefinite hospital order, according to court proceedings.
Albashir will be held in a secure hospital for as long as he is considered a danger, court documents state. He will only be transferred to prison if he is judged recovered enough to leave.
