BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AUTHORITIES SAY A 62-YEAR-OLD FORMER MICHIGAN ATTORNEY FATALLY SHOT HIS GOOD FRIEND INSIDE A SALOON BATHROOM WITHOUT ANY KNOWN DISPUTE… AND HE HAS NOW BEEN SENTENCED TO 18 TO 40 YEARS IN PRISON.

Nearly three years after 53-year-old Theron Duncan was fatally shot inside the bathroom of a Michigan bar, the former attorney responsible for his death is headed to prison.
That sentence means he is headed behind bars for what could effectively be the rest of his natural life.
On Monday, 62-year-old Evan Dixon was officially sentenced to serve 18 to 40 years in state prison.
The sentence came after Dixon previously entered a guilty plea to a charge of second-degree murder.
In November 2023, the fatal encounter took place inside the Douglass House Saloon in Houghton, Michigan.
The deadly shooting occurred inside the saloon’s bathroom.
Duncan, the man who was killed inside the establishment, was 53 years old.
But even after admitting responsibility for Duncan’s death, Dixon told the court he still couldn’t provide an explanation for what happened.
Before receiving his sentence from the judge, Dixon addressed the courtroom directly.
The former attorney spoke for approximately 15 minutes.
During his remarks, Dixon described the man he killed as his “good friend.”
He maintained to the court that there had been no dispute between them before the fatal encounter occurred.
“I can’t change what happened,” Dixon told the court.
“I can’t even explain what happened.”
Dixon had originally faced considerably more serious legal exposure in the criminal proceedings.
Prosecutors initially charged him with first-degree murder.
They also initially charged him with a felony firearm offense.
In June, the direction of the case changed under a plea agreement reached between the parties.

Under the terms of that agreement, the first-degree murder charge and the firearm charge were dismissed.
In exchange for the dismissals, Dixon agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder.
Prosecutors said the agreement was reached after consultation with Duncan’s family.
The victim’s family members told prosecutors that they wanted the lengthy criminal case finally brought to an end.
Duncan’s mother and daughter both addressed the court before sentencing took place.
Both women described the permanent impact his death has had on their family.
His daughter spoke directly about what her father’s absence will mean for the next generation.
She told the court that her children will never personally know their grandfather.
Those children include the baby she is currently expecting.
Instead, her children will have to learn who Theron Duncan was through the stories their family tells about him.
Judge Matthew Wiese ultimately sentenced Dixon to serve 18 to 40 years behind bars.
Dixon received credit toward his sentence for 1,023 days already served in custody.
At 62 years old, even the minimum portion of that sentence carries long-term consequences.
It means Dixon could be an elderly man before he has an opportunity to regain his freedom.
The first-degree murder and firearm charges were dismissed as part of the negotiated plea agreement.
Yet Dixon’s conviction is no longer an allegation.
Evan Dixon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.
He has now been sentenced to 18 to 40 years in prison for the death of Duncan.
And he stood before a judge while continuing to describe the victim as his “good friend.”
