East Point trio accused of stealing $65,000 in rent checks as 60 Fulton Pointe tenants faced eviction are charged with fraud

A Georgia family intercepted more than $65,000 in rent checks from at least 60 victims, according to East Point police.

Destiny Dorsey, Christia Smith and Cynthia Dorsey are accused of participating in the theft scheme targeting Fulton Pointe Apartments, police said.

Investigators say the three women intercepted and stole rent checks and money orders over several months, arrest warrants state.

The alleged thefts left tenants facing eviction despite believing their housing balances were fully satisfied, according to investigators.

One resident, Kayla Sherrod, said she was evicted in April while caring for a newborn child, according to a local television report.

Sherrod said her mother had paid multiple months of advance rent to cover approximately December through May, but apartment management claimed the money was never received.

Eviction paperwork Sherrod provided to the news station reportedly listed Destiny Dorsey as the plaintiff, according to records.

Sherrod watched other residents across the complex get removed from their apartments before she was displaced herself, she said.

The eviction created additional hardship while her mother was recovering from a stroke in a nursing facility, Sherrod said.

Destiny Dorsey, Christia Smith and Cynthia Dorsey each face six fraud-related charges in the case, East Point police said.

Investigators believe the alleged activity may extend beyond Fulton Pointe Apartments, according to authorities.

Money could have been taken from tenants living at other area apartment complexes as well, police said.

The investigation remains ongoing, East Point police said.
