Barricaded suspect Michael Wade Hargett charged with murder after two elderly women gunned down: cops

Michael Wade Hargett, 64, of Greensboro, is charged in connection with the deaths of the two women, according to police.

On Aug. 23, gunfire broke out in the Grandover neighborhood and left two women dead, police said.

Authorities identified the victims as Kathryn Binkley, 73, and Margaret Collins, 76.

The two women were trying to help a neighbor when the violence occurred, according to Binkley’s family.

Family members said the two victims were simply attempting to help someone when they were shot. Police, however, have not confirmed that account as the motive, according to authorities.

Investigators have also not publicly explained exactly what happened immediately before the fatal shots were fired, police said.

After the two women were shot, Hargett allegedly barricaded himself inside a nearby residence, authorities said.

The barricade prompted a significant police response to the area, according to authorities.

Officers eventually took the 64-year-old Greensboro man into custody, police said.

Hargett also suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the shootings took place, authorities said.

The suspect has been receiving medical treatment for the wound, according to authorities. His current condition has not been released, police said.

Officers served Hargett with arrest warrants while he was being treated, police said.

Hargett is now charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling and discharging a firearm within city limits, according to police.

The attempted murder charge was filed alongside the charges for the two deaths, police said. Authorities, however, have only publicly identified the two women who were killed in the incident, according to investigators.

Hargett remains accused and has not been convicted in connection with the shootings, records show.
