Vincent took a single, measured step toward Victoria, his towering presence casting a long shadow across the marble floor.
"Explain yourself, Victoria," he said, his voice quiet yet carrying to the furthest corners of the room.
Victoria swallowed hard, her manicured fingers clawing at the expensive fabric of her designer gown.
"Vincent, it was a dreadful misunderstanding," she stammered, casting a frantic glance around the silent crowd.
"You were about to strike a defenseless elderly woman in a wheelchair," Vincent replied, his gaze unblinking.
"I didn’t know she was your mother!" Victoria cried out, the desperation cracking her polished facade.
"So if she had been anyone else’s mother, your cruelty would have been justified?" he asked.
The chilling question hung in the ballroom air, suffocating any remaining excuses Victoria could muster.
Isabella reached out from her wheelchair, her frail fingers lightly brushing her son’s tailored sleeve.
"She demanded I leave the table, Vincent," Isabella said softly, her voice still trembling with emotion.
"She claimed someone looking like me had no right to sit near the center stage," Isabella added.
Emma felt a knot twist in her chest as she heard the full depth of Victoria’s arrogance laid bare.
Victoria opened her mouth to protest, but the cold fury radiating from Vincent silenced her instantly.
Before another word could be spoken, hurried footsteps echoed across the polished ballroom floor.
The banquet manager, Mr. Henderson, arrived out of breath, his face flushed red with sheer panic.
He did not look at Vincent’s face, focusing instead entirely on Emma standing beside the socialite.
"Miss Carter, what on earth have you done?" Henderson barked, trembling with anxious rage.
"Step away from Miss Langford this instant and get out," Henderson ordered, reaching to grab Emma’s arm.
"Touch her, and you will never work in this state again," Vincent warned in a low, lethal tone.
Henderson froze mid-motion, his arm suspended in the air as he finally recognized the man speaking.
Color drained from the manager’s face in an instant, his mouth dropping open in utter disbelief.
"Mr. Moretti," Henderson squeaked, hastily retreating three steps back into the surrounding crowd.
Vincent did not even glance at the terrified manager; his dark eyes remained locked on Victoria.
"You brought shame to this room tonight, Victoria," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
"Please, Vincent, think of our families," Victoria pleaded, tears of humiliation welling in her eyes.
"The Langford Group relies entirely on the port development contract with Moretti Enterprises," she whispered.
"Then your father should have taught you how to treat human beings," Vincent responded coldly.
"Consider that contract terminated as of tomorrow morning," he added, without an ounce of hesitation.
Gasps rippled across the grand room as the wealthy guests realized what had just occurred.
Victoria staggered backward half a step, pressing a trembling hand against her chest in shock.
A nine-figure business partnership had just dissolved in the span of five seconds.
"You can’t ruin my family over a nameless waitress and an old woman!" Victoria shrieked, losing control.
The entire ballroom fell deathly still, the brazen cruelty of Victoria’s words ringing in everyone’s ears.
Vincent’s jaw clenched, his composure terrifyingly rigid as he stepped into her personal space.
"That ‘old woman’ built the foundation of the empire you are begging from," Vincent said, razor-sharp.
"And that young woman possesses more honor than your entire family ever will," he added.
Isabella looked up toward Emma, her gentle eyes brimming with deep warmth and profound gratitude.
"She shielded me when none of your wealthy friends dared to move," Isabella said, looking at the crowd.
Prominent guests immediately averted their eyes, flushed with a sudden and heavy sense of shame.
Vincent raised his right hand toward the heavy double doors at the rear of the grand hall.
"Security," Vincent commanded, his voice cutting through the thick silence like a blade.
Two imposing guards in black suits stepped forward instantly, flanking the trembling socialite.
"Escort Miss Langford out of the venue immediately," Vincent instructed without looking at her.
"Wait, Vincent, please have mercy!" Victoria cried as the guards firmly took hold of her arms.
"Apologize to my mother and Miss Carter first," Vincent stated, his tone brooking no argument.
Humiliated before the highest circle of Chicago society, Victoria bowed her head in bitter defeat.
"I am deeply sorry," Victoria choked out, tears ruining her makeup as security led her away.
A stunned quiet lingered in the grand hall as the heavy oak doors shut firmly behind Victoria.
Emma exhaled a shaky breath she hadn’t realized she was holding, her knees trembling from exhaustion.
Vincent turned his attention fully toward Emma, the coldness in his demeanor completely evaporating.
"You risked your entire livelihood for someone you didn’t even know," Vincent observed softly.
"Anyone should have protected her, sir," Emma whispered, her voice still rough with emotion.
"Yet out of two hundred people, only you moved," Isabella said, clasping Emma’s calloused hand.
"You stood between me and humiliation without a second of hesitation," the older woman added.
Vincent shifted his gaze toward the banquet manager, who still stood trembling beside the marble pillar.
"Henderson, Miss Carter’s shift as a waitress ends tonight," Vincent declared in a calm voice.
"Prepare her final check with triple severance pay," Vincent commanded the pale supervisor.
Emma’s heart plummeted for a terrifying second, the cold dread of unemployment clutching her throat.
"Because starting Monday," Vincent continued, meeting Emma’s startled eyes, "she works directly for me."
"My mother’s charitable foundation has desperately needed a director with genuine integrity," he explained.
"Your father’s medical bills and your sister’s tuition will be covered in full tomorrow morning," he added.
Tears welled in Emma’s eyes as the crushing weight of her family’s debt vanished into thin air.
"Thank you, Mr. Moretti," Emma breathed, pressing Isabella’s gentle hand against her chest.
Isabella smiled warmly, patting Emma’s fingers with motherly tenderness.
"No, my dear Emma," Isabella whispered with tears in her eyes. "Thank you."
