Gonzales Middle School Teacher of the Year Kyle Delaney, 25, is jailed for attempted murder after allegedly shooting two men

A Louisiana middle school teacher was arrested for attempted murder after allegedly trying to gun down two people in the street, police said.

Kyle Delaney, 25, worked as an educator at Gonzales Middle School, according to district records.

Deputies were called to the scene on Tuesday afternoon in Donaldsonville, about 35 miles south of Baton Rouge, the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

One of the wounded men had been struck multiple times by gunfire, deputies said.

Two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds in Donaldsonville, according to the sheriff’s office. But the victims were not publicly identified, and it was not clear how they were tied to the teacher, police said.

Delaney allegedly arrived at the victims’ location, stepped out of his vehicle, and opened fire, according to deputies.

“Detectives learned that Delaney arrived at the victims’ location, exited his vehicle and fired multiple shots in their direction before fleeing the scene,” the department said.

Deputies confirmed the gunfire occurred without giving any motive for the shooting, the sheriff’s office said.

The shooter fled the scene immediately after the gunfire, the department said. But police tracked the teacher down that night to a residence in Gonzales, about 17 miles north of Donaldsonville, and took him into custody, deputies said.

The 25-year-old was booked on two counts of attempted second-degree murder, court records show.

Delaney was also charged with illegal use of weapons and criminal damage to property, according to the records.

The suspect taught seventh-grade social studies at Gonzales Middle School, according to the school’s website.

Delaney was honored on the campus website as the school’s 2024-2025 New Teacher of the Year, according to the district. But Ascension Public Schools told WAFB on Wednesday that the educator is no longer employed by the district.

The district declined to address questions regarding the shooting or the arrest, citing the ongoing investigation, according to the outlet.

“As this is an active law enforcement matter, questions regarding the incident, arrest, or criminal charges should be directed to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, and we are unable to comment further on personnel matters,” a district spokesperson told the outlet.

Delaney was still in jail on Thursday awaiting arraignment, court records show.
