What police found on Angelo Drew Martinez 20 after three Albuquerque football players overpowered carjacking suspect

A 20-year-old Albuquerque man was arrested after allegedly pulling a gun on three football players who turned on him and held him for officers, police said.

The suspect was identified as Angelo Drew Martinez, 20, of Albuquerque.

On the night of August 11, 2017, Martinez approached three football players near the Loma Linda Community Center practice field and asked for a ride, police said.

The players agreed to give him a ride, according to police.

Martinez repeatedly changed his mind about where he wanted to go during the trip, police said.

The vehicle eventually stopped in front of a house, police said. Martinez then allegedly pulled out a gun and ordered all three players out of the car.

The three players stepped out of the vehicle as ordered, according to police.

One of the players noticed Martinez fumbling with the weapon and immediately climbed back into the car swinging, police said. The other two players joined him in the struggle.

The three athletes pinned Martinez down together and held him until officers arrived at the scene, police said.

When officers inspected the weapon Martinez had brandished, they discovered it was not real, police said.

Martinez was also carrying a knife during the encounter, according to police.

Officers also found a handwritten note demanding the players’ car keys, according to police. The note stated: “I know where you live so don’t make me kill.”

By the time Martinez was booked into custody, both of his eyes were swollen completely shut, both were blackened, and his face was covered in cuts, police said.

The suspect was charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, court records show.

Martinez was released from custody about a week later, according to records.
