A 58-year-old Maine caretaker was arrested after calling police to report that a family member was threatening him with a hammer, Bangor police said.
Ronald Rideout, 58, was taken into custody following the police response to a home on Palm Street, authorities said.
On Wednesday morning, officers responded to the Palm Street address after Rideout allegedly reported the threat with the weapon, police said.
Investigators then spoke with the other person involved in the dispute, police said.
The family member stated that the hammer was being held for self-defense, according to authorities. Rideout had allegedly assaulted him the previous night, police said.

The investigation did not stop with the initial assault allegation, police said.
The relative reportedly told officers that the suspect was also his caretaker, police said. That family member had previously required hospital treatment because of an alleged lack of care, according to authorities.
The call ultimately resulted in Rideout himself being arrested, police said.
The caretaker was charged with domestic violence aggravated assault, according to authorities.
Rideout has been charged and has not been convicted, police noted.
He is being held at the Penobscot County Jail, authorities said.
