An Alabama man allegedly struck and killed another man with an aluminum baseball bat during an argument over a missing dog, Clarke County investigators said.
Rickey Lee Harrell II, 56, was taken into custody and charged with murder following the fatal incident, authorities said.
The victim in the deadly beating was identified as 50-year-old Roger Reginald Newton, according to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were initially dispatched to a residence on Round Hill Road in Thomasville around 6:15 p.m. on Saturday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Harrell and Newton became involved in an argument over the missing dog at the home, investigators said. The dispute then escalated into a fatal confrontation, according to authorities.
During the altercation, Harrell allegedly struck Newton with an aluminum baseball bat, killing him, according to investigators.
Authorities located and took the suspect into custody about an hour later, deputies said.
The 56-year-old has now been charged with murder in connection with Newton’s death, authorities said. He has not been convicted of the charge, and the allegations must still be proven in court, records state.
Harrell is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Friday for an Aniah’s Law hearing, officials said.
At that hearing, the court can consider whether the defendant should be held without bail while the murder case remains pending, according to authorities.
