Twist in case of convicted NYC cabbie rapist Gurmeet Singh serving 20 years for knifepoint assault

An India-born cab driver sentenced to 20 years behind bars for kidnapping and raping a woman at knifepoint in 2011 has had his citizenship revoked, the Justice Department said Monday.

Gurmeet Singh is now 55 years old.

He was convicted in 2014 of the violent sexual assault of his young female passenger.

In May 2011, the woman hailed his cab for a ride from Williamsburg to her East Village apartment.

She fell asleep as he drove.

According to a victim impact statement read by prosecutors at Singh’s sentencing, the woman woke up to find the cabbie on top of her.

He was holding a knife against her throat.

He asked her if she wanted to live.

Singh threatened the victim.

He bound and gagged her.

He blindfolded her.

He removed her clothes.

And he raped her.

After the attack, the woman fled his taxi on foot.

She flagged down a passerby for help.

The assault took place weeks before Singh filed his naturalization application.

The Justice Department said Singh “concealed these acts” throughout his naturalization proceedings.

On Oct. 19, 2011, Singh became a US citizen.

On Monday, May 12, 2014, a jury in Brooklyn Supreme Court found him guilty of rape and kidnapping.

He received a 20-year prison sentence.

“Singh unlawfully obtained the privileges of U.S. citizenship by concealing horrible criminal acts,” said Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate of the Justice Department’s Civil Division.

“The Department will continue to protect the integrity of the citizenship process and hold accountable those who defraud our immigration system.”

Singh had originally arrived in the country nearly two decades before the attack.

In February 1992, Singh initially entered the US as a temporary visitor on a six-month visa.

He stayed in the country without authorization for years.

But a visa petition by his family allowed him to become a permanent resident in June 2000.

Then, after the 2011 attack, he secured full citizenship while hiding his crimes from immigration officials.

Singh is currently incarcerated at Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Ulster County.

The facility also houses “Son of Sam” killer David Berkowitz.

An order issued last week by Brooklyn federal judge Nicholas Garaufis brings his citizenship to an end.

The order gives Singh until Sept. 16 to hand over his citizenship documents.

Those documents include his naturalization certificate and his US passport.

His naturalization has been revoked.

He remains in state prison.
