Chilling confession from 18-year-old Kavarion Nelson accused of shooting at fleeing Monroe robbery victim

An 18-year-old Monroe-area resident is facing multiple serious felony charges after an alleged robbery attempt escalated into gunfire, according to police.

Kavarion Laroy Nelson was taken into custody by Monroe police following the incident.

Investigators say the encounter took place on the night of August 27.

According to court and booking documents, Nelson had been at a local store with two other individuals prior to the confrontation.

The probable cause affidavit states that the group of three left the business together.

According to the affidavit, the other two individuals put on ski masks as soon as they exited the store.

Nelson allegedly acknowledged to detectives that he “knew what was about to happen.”

Investigators interpreted that admission, alongside other evidence, as an indication that the robbery attempt had been planned in advance.

On August 28, investigators conducted an interview with the victim.

The victim described one of the assailants as a dark-skinned male with dreadlocks.

The victim further reported that this individual stood approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall or shorter.

Investigators noted that the description provided by the victim matched Nelson.

According to the victim’s account, that same individual produced a firearm during the encounter.

The armed individual then spoke directly to the victim.

“You know what’s up,” the suspect told him, according to the victim.

Police say the other alleged accomplices then moved in on the victim.

Those individuals attempted to go through the victim’s pockets.

But the victim attempted to escape the confrontation by running away from the group.

Investigators allege that Nelson dropped his firearm during the physical confrontation.

Nelson then retrieved the weapon from the ground.

And investigators allege that he fired two rounds toward the fleeing victim.

When Nelson was initially questioned by investigators, he allegedly denied being involved in the incident.

Nelson claimed during that initial interview that he had been at home at the time.

Then investigators formally advised him of his Miranda rights.

Police say his account of the evening changed after he received that warning.

Nelson reportedly admitted that he had been at the local store with the two other individuals before the encounter occurred.

He also told investigators about seeing the other two individuals put on ski masks upon leaving the store.

Monroe police subsequently took Nelson into custody in connection with the shooting.

He was transported by officers to the Ouachita Correctional Center.

Nelson was booked into the facility on August 28, 2026.

His arrest and booking took place one day after the alleged attack.

Court and booking documents state that Nelson faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

He is also charged with attempted armed robbery with a firearm enhancement.

In addition, Nelson faces a charge of criminal conspiracy.

Booking records indicate he also faces charges related to the use of a firearm.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
