Shocking twist in case of Bronx mother Dimone Fleming who fatally stabbed her two young sons

A case involving the deaths of two small children inside a Bronx family shelter has reached a conclusion distinct from an ordinary murder conviction.

Dimone Fleming, who was 22 years old at the time of the 2022 tragedy, faced criminal prosecution after her children were found dead.

She has now been found not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect for the deaths of her two sons.

In August 2022, police discovered the two children inside a Bronx family shelter where the family had been staying.

Officers located 3-year-old Daishawn and 11-month-old Octavius inside a bathtub.

Both children had suffered multiple stab wounds.

Fleming initially confessed to killing her two sons.

Following that initial confession, she was charged with first-degree murder.

But over the years that followed, the criminal case shifted focus toward Fleming’s mental condition at the time the children died.

Mental health experts were called to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbings.

Psychiatric specialists evaluated Fleming on behalf of the prosecution.

Experts representing the defense also conducted evaluations into her mental health.

According to the findings presented in the case, mental health experts working for both sides reached the exact same conclusion.

Both prosecution and defense experts concluded that Fleming was experiencing severe postpartum psychosis when she killed her children.

Postpartum psychosis is a rare but extremely serious psychiatric condition that can emerge after childbirth.

The condition can involve severe confusion.

It can also cause delusions and hallucinations.

The psychiatric disorder is characterized by a profound loss of contact with reality.

Dr. Veerle Bergink explained that major biological changes occur after childbirth.

Dr. Bergink noted that these postpartum biological changes include a dramatic shift in hormone levels.

Based on the psychiatric evidence presented, the judge determined that Fleming could not legally be held criminally responsible for her actions.

The court formally ruled that she was not responsible due to a “mental disease or defect.”

Yet that judicial ruling does not mean Fleming is simply being released.

She remains in custody as proceedings transition to the psychiatric system.

Fleming is now expected to undergo another psychiatric evaluation.

That evaluation will determine whether she currently presents a danger to herself or others.

The assessment will also determine what level of psychiatric confinement or treatment is appropriate.

Fleming is scheduled to return to court on September 18.

On that date, the court is expected to consider the next formal steps regarding her placement in a psychiatric facility.
