“I AM BACK ON THE STREETS AND NOBODY CAN STOP ME”!!! BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AUTHORITIES SAY A PAROLEE WITH THIRTY PRIOR ARRESTS KILLED A MAN WITH A MEAT CLEAVER IN A BRONX LAUNDROMAT… AND NOW THE CITY MAYOR HAS PUBLICLY MOURNED THE ACCUSED INMATE’S DEATH IN JAIL.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani publicly mourned the death of a Rikers Island inmate held in city custody this week.
The deceased inmate, Clarence Woodward, was awaiting trial for murder at the jail facility.
“I am deeply saddened by the death of a New Yorker in City custody at a jail on Rikers Island early this morning,” Mamdani tweeted Tuesday.
The mayor also extended his sympathy to Woodward’s “family and loved ones as they grieve this loss.”
Corrections Commissioner Stanley Richards likewise spoke publicly about the inmate’s death, describing it as a “tragedy.”
Woodward was in custody for a fatal attack that took place inside a Bronx laundromat.
In 2024, Woodward took the life of Jose Miranda with a meat cleaver at the laundromat location.
The attack on Miranda occurred on camera.
Woodward had just been released from prison on parole for assault and attempted robbery when the killing occurred.
His criminal record included 30 prior offenses.
Miranda’s family publicly addressed the mayor’s expressions of sympathy for Woodward.

The victim’s relatives called the mayor’s public words “a slap in the face.”
Mamdani stated that “too many New Yorkers have died on Rikers Island.”
Most individuals who die while held at Rikers Island pass away after a “medical emergency.”
Such emergencies are frequently identified as drug overdoses.
Other inmate fatalities occur at the hands of fellow inmates rather than correction officers.
Mamdani has made several visits to the Rikers Island jail complex.
He traveled to the facility for a Ramadan iftar break-fast.
He returned to the island to attend an inmate graduation ceremony in June.
Last month, Mamdani visited the facility again to watch the England-Argentina World Cup semifinal with a group of inmates.
And public condolences offered for suspects in violent encounters have extended beyond New York.
In March 2025, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu offered “condolences” for the family of a knife-wielding individual who was killed by police after chasing two people into a Chick-fil-A.
Woodward remained in custody at Rikers Island on his murder charge until his death early Tuesday morning.
