Jeffrey Jorge Charged with Murder and Attempted Murder After Bronx Stabbing Leaves City Schools Worker Dead and Friend Injured

A fatal attack took place on a Bronx street on Wednesday afternoon, according to police and law enforcement sources.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. at the corner of Davidson Avenue and West Tremont Avenue in the Morris Heights section of the borough.

Police said the bloodshed followed a dispute on the street.

Law enforcement sources noted on Thursday that it remained unclear what originally prompted the clash.

The two men who were attacked were friends.

Yet according to sources, it was not clear whether their assailant was known to them.

During the confrontation, 32-year-old Rashaun Shettlewood was stabbed once in the chest.

Shettlewood worked as a paraprofessional for the New York City Department of Education, law enforcement sources said.

He resided approximately one mile away from the Morris Heights intersection where the stabbing occurred.

His 33-year-old friend was stabbed repeatedly in the torso during the same attack.

Both victims were transported from the scene to St. Barnabas Hospital for medical treatment.

Shettlewood succumbed to his stab wounds at the hospital, police said.

His 33-year-old companion was listed in stable condition, according to authorities.

Investigators subsequently moved to locate the person responsible for the fatal violence.

Police identified the suspect as 37-year-old Jeffrey Jorge of Brooklyn.

Officers apprehended Jorge at approximately 6:30 a.m. in Brooklyn.

He was taken into custody near Ocean Avenue and Parkside Avenue in the Prospect-Lefferts Gardens neighbourhood.

Police said officers discovered him in possession of a knife at the time of his arrest.

Investigators then connected him to the fatal Bronx stabbing, according to the NYPD.

Following his arrest, Jorge was formally charged with murder.

He was also charged with attempted murder.

The NYPD stated that he faces an additional charge of manslaughter.

Authorities also charged him with two counts of assault.

He was further charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Police reported that Jorge has a history of 13 previous arrests on his record.

His most recent prior arrest took place in May 2022.

That arrest followed a stabbing incident that occurred earlier that year in January 2022.

In that case, a 44-year-old man was stabbed at Davidson Avenue and West Tremont Avenue.

That location is the exact same Morris Heights street corner where Wednesday’s fatal stabbing occurred.

The 44-year-old victim in that 2022 incident survived and was hospitalized in stable condition, police said.

And Jorge’s arrest history includes earlier knife-related allegations in the Bronx.

On December 8, 2018, he was arrested for allegedly menacing an individual with a knife at 174th Street and Grand Avenue.

Authorities said he then bit a police officer while resisting arrest during that 2018 incident.

The judicial disposition of those prior cases was not immediately known.

Jorge’s arraignment on the murder charges remained pending on Thursday evening.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
