Inmate Dies After Fall From Second-Floor Railing at Winnebago County Jail

A 57-year-old Illinois inmate has died following an incident inside the Winnebago County Jail.

The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Holland Morefield Jr.

On Saturday, August 22, the incident occurred at approximately 8:12 a.m.

According to officials, Morefield climbed over a railing situated on the jail’s second floor.

He then jumped from the elevated area to the level below.

Correctional officers immediately attempted lifesaving measures at the scene.

Morefield was transported from the detention facility to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

But he was later pronounced dead at the medical facility.

The coroner determined that Morefield died from blunt-force trauma to the head sustained during the fall.

At the time of his death, Morefield was incarcerated inside the facility following a conviction.

That conviction was for violating an order of protection connected to a previous domestic battery case.

And Morefield was facing additional criminal allegations in a separate domestic battery case.

Those pending charges reportedly included an allegation of aggravated assault against a police officer, correctional officer or firefighter.

Yet authorities have not released additional details explaining the circumstances immediately before Morefield climbed over the railing.

Officials also have not publicly explained whether Morefield was under any heightened supervision at the jail.

And authorities have not disclosed what security measures were in place around the second-floor balcony when the incident occurred.
