Minnesota Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole in Fatal Shooting of 72-Year-Old Roommate

Jacob John Audie will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

The 37-year-old Minnesota man received the harshest punishment available under state law after being convicted of murder.

The victim was 72-year-old Michael Maurice Schille.

The two men shared a home in South St. Paul.

Inside that residence, Audie reportedly acted as Schille’s caretaker.

On April 11, 2025, Audie used Schille’s own AR-style rifle to shoot him inside their residence.

After the shooting, Audie called 911 himself.

He reported to emergency dispatchers what he had done.

Yet Audie did not describe the killing as an accident.

He did not deny responsibility for taking Schille’s life.

Instead, Audie attempted to justify the shooting.

He characterized Schille’s death as a “mercy killing”.

Audie claimed he had acted to end the 72-year-old man’s suffering.

Authorities said Audie expressed no remorse for taking Schille’s life.

And authorities said Audie reportedly maintained that he “would do it again.”

The case against him eventually proceeded through a stipulated-facts trial.

Under that process, the judge decided the case based on an agreed-upon factual record rather than a traditional jury trial.

On August 19, Dakota County District Judge Kathryn Iverson delivered her decision.

Judge Iverson found Audie guilty of first-degree premeditated murder.

The judge also found him guilty of second-degree murder.

Six days after his conviction, Audie returned to court to learn his punishment.

Under Minnesota law, a conviction for first-degree premeditated murder carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

On Tuesday, August 25, the judge imposed that sentence.

Audie, now 37, will spend the remainder of his life in prison.
