A casino employee accused of attacking five of his colleagues at a Northern California resort has entered a not-guilty plea to attempted murder charges.
Joseph Naugle, 22, will undergo a psychiatric evaluation following the incident.
His attorney made the request for a mental-health review during an appearance in a Placer County courtroom on Wednesday.
The court-ordered evaluation will be used to determine whether Naugle is mentally fit to stand trial.
Naugle appeared in court for his arraignment dressed in an orange T-shirt and orange-and-white-striped pants.
He pleaded not guilty to the multiple charges filed against him.
The charges stem from an alleged attack that took place at the Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Lincoln.
The incident unfolded on a Wednesday night inside the resort property.
Naugle worked as a kitchen employee at Dos Coyotes, an eatery operating inside the casino.
Authorities allege that Naugle attacked fellow staff members with a knife inside the restaurant’s kitchen area.
Five coworkers sustained injuries during the alleged assault.
Bloodied victims then spilled out of the eatery and onto the surrounding casino floor.
Gamblers at the resort looked on as the wounded workers emerged from the restaurant.

A caller alerted law enforcement to the incident taking place inside the venue.
Police officers responded to the casino within minutes of receiving the report.
Officers immediately took Naugle into custody at the scene.
Naugle was still wearing his kitchen apron at the time of his arrest.
Emergency medical personnel arrived to treat the injured staff members.
Four of the victims received treatment at the scene from emergency workers.
One worker was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
That hospitalized victim was released hours later after undergoing emergency medical care.
Naugle is a resident of nearby Roseville.
He graduated from a local high school in 2022.
Yet investigators have not disclosed what prompted the alleged violence.
The motive behind the alleged slashing remains under active investigation by law enforcement.
Naugle continues to face multiple criminal charges in connection with the casino attack.
And he is scheduled to appear back in court on September 2.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
