Hans Hamilton was driving north on the 429 Expressway in Orange County, Florida.
His route was taking him past Walt Disney World.
Along the highway, Hamilton saw a white Lexus that had crashed into a guardrail.
Beside the damaged vehicle, he saw a man lying motionless in the grass.
“I saw the body there and my immediate thought was he’s dead,” Hamilton later said.
Hamilton pulled his vehicle over to the side of the expressway to investigate.
He rolled down his window.
He called out to the man lying in the grass.
There was no response from the motionless man.
Hamilton decided to step out of his vehicle to help him.
But the moment Hamilton’s car door closed, the man sprang up from the grass.
The man ran directly at him.
“He was waiting for that door to close, and that’s when he pounced,” Hamilton said.
Cameras mounted directly on Hamilton’s own Tesla recorded what happened next.
The man climbed onto the hood of the car.
He climbed onto the roof of the vehicle.
The windshield was shattered during the incident.
The man then tackled Hamilton to the ground.
For nearly 30 seconds, the man punched Hamilton repeatedly on the ground.
The blows landed on Hamilton’s head, face, neck, and back.
“I’m going to kill you! I’m going to kill you!” the man yelled during the attack.
Hamilton later said he has almost no memory of the violent encounter.
Only one thought remained on loop in his mind: fight, fight, flight.
Hamilton fought back against the man on the ground.
He struck the man in the throat.
Hamilton struck him there as hard and as many times as he could.
That physical defense finally allowed Hamilton to get the man off him.
Then an Orange County deputy arrived at the scene.
The man was identified as 44-year-old Daniel Coman.
Coman turned on the responding deputy as well.
According to an arrest affidavit, Coman approached the deputy in an “aggressive fighting manner.”
He swung as if to strike the officer.

Hamilton stepped in alongside law enforcement to help the deputy.
Another bystander also intervened.
Hamilton and the bystander helped hold Coman down on the ground.
The deputy was then able to get Coman into handcuffs.
Deputies later learned Coman had been involved in another incident earlier that morning.
He had been involved in a separate hit-and-run crash shortly before.
That collision occurred just two miles away from the expressway location.
According to his arrest affidavit, Coman was also a suspect in a “similar criminal mischief incident” from earlier that same morning.
Hamilton was hospitalized for medical treatment following the attack.
Doctors treated him for a brain bleed.
He was diagnosed with a concussion.
He suffered multiple contusions.
He sustained four broken ribs.
Coman was formally charged with five separate offenses.
He was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer.
He was charged with resisting an officer with violence.
He was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer.
He was charged with battery.
He was charged with criminal mischief.
Deputies asked that Coman be held without bond.
A judge set bond at $5,000 instead.
The bond was set over the sheriff’s objection.
The judge also ordered Coman to have no contact with Hamilton.
“I’m terrified,” Hamilton said.
“I don’t feel safe,” he said.
Hamilton believes the charges should include attempted murder.
“You don’t beat somebody like that without the intention of killing them,” Hamilton said.
Yet Hamilton’s own message afterward was not to stop helping strangers.
His message was to “be cautious … but still remember kindness still needs to exist.”
He urged caution.
He urged kindness.
No public record was found of how Coman’s case was ultimately resolved.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
