Joshua Kohut, 51, is a high-ranking dean at Rutgers University.
He serves as dean of research at Rutgers’ School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.
Kohut is charged with fourth-degree invasion of privacy.
Investigators say he secretly recorded “upskirt” videos of a person without their knowledge.
The alleged recording occurred in New Brunswick.
Rutgers’ main campus is located in that city.
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences is located there as well.
On Monday, investigators executed a search warrant.
According to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, investigators seized five electronic devices belonging to Kohut.
A forensic examination followed.
That examination allegedly uncovered videos on one device showing an unidentified person’s underwear-covered intimate areas.
Authorities say the videos were secretly recorded using Kohut’s cellphone.
Authorities have not said whether the alleged victim was a student.
But the criminal complaint reportedly indicates Kohut and the person may have known one another.

Rutgers placed Kohut on paid administrative leave while the case is investigated.
The university also banned him from campus.
Kohut has a lengthy history with the university.
Nearly three decades ago, he first attended Rutgers as a graduate student.
He later became a professor at the institution.
In January 2025, he was appointed dean of research.
That career spanned nearly 30 years at Rutgers.
He served as a student, professor, administrator and eventually dean.
And now investigators are looking through the seized devices.
Investigators are asking whether there may be more victims.
Authorities are also asking any additional potential victims to come forward.
If convicted, Kohut faces up to 18 months in prison.
He also faces a fine of up to $10,000.
Yet he has been released pending further court proceedings.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
